Clearing / Cleaning the Platen Roller
When labels - that are naturaly sticky, peel off to early the resultant mess will cause the printer to jam. It is important that this jam is cleared and the printer cleaned properly otherwise it will happen more often.
Hint: These items will prove useful, Kept together they can form a cleaning kit containing the following:
- Can of Label remover
- Can of Ipa
- Clean lint free cloth
- Gloves
- Wooden lolly pop stick (eat the lolly first, lick thoroughly, or wash it if you’re fussy)
- Cotton buds / Q tips
Instructions
1) Unless you have a print waiting to come off we recommend you switch off the printer first.
2) Open the printhead and remove the ribbon and as much of the label stock as you can using nothing but fingers. It is ok to rotate the platen roller by hand - In the direction it would normally turn.
3) Coat the stuck labels with a proprietary brand of label remover and leave for 10 minutes or as per the instruction on the can.
4) Remove the remaining stock using nothing more than your fingers and lolly stick. (wear the gloves)
5) Use the ipa and cloth to remove the sticky residue left by the label remover and labels and leave to dry for a minute or two.
6) Clean the printhead, tip here is to dip a cotton bud in the ipa then using a thumb to draw or wipe the bud across the element of the printhead.
7) Reload all your media and power the printer on and test.
Warning: Never use any kind of sharp metal implement to remove labels stuck to the platen roller or printhead, or you will be sorry.
Hint: You may of course then want to go and eat another lolly - just so you have stick spare for the next time of course.
